Fear is something we all face. It can stop us in our tracks, make us doubt ourselves, and cause us to miss out on God’s best for our lives. But Downfall reminds us that fear doesn’t have to paralyze us. Through Joshua’s journey, we learn that courage isn’t about waiting for fear to disappear. Instead, it’s about taking action and trusting God, even when the path ahead is uncertain and full of unknowns.
Courage is Taking Action, Not Being Fearless
Many of us think that courage means having no fear at all, but that’s not what we see in the Bible or in real life. Throughout scripture, God calls His people to be brave, even when they are scared or unsure. He doesn't wait for them to feel fearless before calling them into action. Instead, God shows up in their weakness, giving them the strength they need when they step out in faith.
Joshua, the main character in Downfall, shows us this lesson over and over again. He’s not fearless by any means. In fact, Joshua is constantly battling his insecurities, especially when it comes to his role as a leader and his mission to confront his former friend, Dedecus. Climbing Mount Grave, facing Dedecus, and leading the village after the devastating attack are all overwhelming situations that fill him with fear.
But the beauty of Joshua’s story is that he doesn’t let fear have the final say.
In Joshua 1:9, God commands His people:
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
God doesn’t ask Joshua to wait until he feels strong. He commands him to be strong and courageous, knowing full well that Joshua is afraid. The same applies to us. We may be afraid, but God is calling us to step out in faith anyway, trusting that He will go with us.
Overcoming Fear with Action
One of the key moments in Downfall is when Joshua makes the decision to climb Mount Grave. Everything inside him is telling him to turn back. After all, he’s not experienced in rock climbing, he’s physically exhausted, and the possibility of failure looms large. And yet, he knows that Dedecus must be stopped, and he believes that God has placed this mission in front of him.
Here’s the thing: Joshua isn’t suddenly free from fear. He’s scared for his life, worried about what might happen, and anxious about whether he’s making the right choice. But he acts anyway.
And that’s the heart of courage.
Courage isn’t about waiting until we feel ready or confident. It’s about taking steps forward even when we’re unsure. Just like Joshua, we need to acknowledge our fear but not let it stop us from moving toward what God is calling us to do.
Here are a few ways to take action even when fear is present:
Identify the source of your fear: Sometimes, the hardest part is naming what we’re afraid of. Is it failure? Rejection? Pain? Once you identify your fear, it loses some of its power.
Take small steps: You don’t have to leap all at once. Start with small actions that push you forward, even if they seem insignificant. In Downfall, Joshua didn’t conquer the mountain in one go. He climbed one step at a time.
Remember God’s promises: Scripture is full of reminders that God is with us in our fear. Keep verses like Isaiah 41:10 close:
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Trusting God in the Unknown
One of the reasons we often feel stuck in fear is because of the unknown. We like certainty. We like to know exactly how things are going to turn out. But life doesn’t work that way. Much of what God calls us to do requires us to step out into the unknown, trusting Him with the outcome.
Joshua’s journey is full of uncertainty. He doesn’t know what will happen when he confronts Dedecus. He doesn’t know how the village will respond to his leadership. He doesn’t know if he’ll even survive the climb up Mount Grave. But in each moment, Joshua learns to trust that God is working, even when he can’t see the full picture.
This is echoed in Proverbs 3:5-6:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Trusting God doesn’t mean we’ll have all the answers. It means we take the next step forward, knowing that He is guiding us, even when we can’t see the full plan.
The Reward of Courage
Joshua’s story in Downfall teaches us that courage leads to transformation—not just in the world around us, but within us. As Joshua pushes through his fears, he becomes a stronger, more compassionate leader. His willingness to act, even when afraid, brings him closer to God and deepens his faith.
And that’s true for us, too. When we choose to act despite our fears, we open ourselves up to the transformation God wants to bring in our lives. We learn that He is faithful and that His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Downfall shows us that courage isn’t about being fearless; it’s about trusting God enough to act even when we’re afraid. If you’re looking for a story that will inspire you to push through fear and embrace faith, pick up Downfall and follow Joshua’s incredible journey of bravery and transformation.
