Several days ago, I was on a group call with one of my spiritual mentors and he asked us this question:
What does it actually mean to be a disciple of Jesus? Beyond just being a “Christian”, what does it actually look like to follow Jesus?
The list below were some of our answers.
What would you add to this list? And what is one specific area you want to be intentional about in growing as a disciple of Jesus?
To be a disciple of Jesus means:
- To have continued intentionality in listening to the Holy Spirit’s conviction and guidance and acting on it.
- A desire and then a follow-through to repent and obey.
- To count God as faithful to his words and to respond accordingly.
- To view life through the lens of trusting God every day.
- Philippians 3: to count everything as loss - to give it all up and not hold so tightly to the things of this age and desire the age to come more.
- To settle it in your heart that martyrdom could be your end. Lk 9:24 -deny himself. Persecution is expected.
- To have the Holy Spirit and bear the fruits of the Spirit, doing deeds motivated to glorify God.
- To make other disciples.
- To imitate the manner of life of their rabbi.
- To return grace for grace and have immense gratitude.
- To have urgency - no wasting time
- To eagerly expect all that God has planned for the resurrection and eternal life.
- To prioritize God’s chosen people Israel. Or as Paul said, to the Jew first.
- To walk in humility - Sermon on the Mount. Turn the other cheek, etc. Be a doormat for people.
- To look like Jesus - how he acted, forgiving others, etc.
- To be in continual awe and wonder of what God has done and will do.
